Anyone else HATE Uncanny?

So am I alone? I absolutly hate Uncanny X-Men!!!! Casey really needs to go. This has been the worst run of any writer on the title. Nightcrawler has been written woefully out of character and thse stories are just plain awful. I dropped the comic today For the first time in 20 years I actually dropped the X-Men This has me really upset. I love this comic but I can't take this writing any more. What really irks me though is that my favorite character is currently stuck in an awful comic book. Maybe we can write in to Marvel to set Kurt free...Maybe Morrison or Claremont would take him in (especially since Kitty is returning to Extreme, where Kurt would fit in better) So what do you guys and gals think?

I haven't been delighted, that's for sure. There have been a couple of bright spots for me, though. Sean Phillips' pages in #400 were beautiful, and a couple of Nighty's scenes with Wolverine have been nice. #399 was pretty good overall, even though Kurt was barely in it. But #401 really sucked. I loathe Garney's art, and Casey just plain bores me. I would love to see Kurt in Morrison's book, but he doesn't really seem like the kind of character Morrison would write well. And Claremont is so washed up creatively that I'd hate to see Kurt end up in his book. Unfortunately, I think Kurt is best off where he is. Maybe Casey will improve and Marvel will hire Sean Phillips.

well it started out less than stellar, i admit. and i think the last one was weak but that was mostly because of 'Nuff Said. i really liked both 399 and 400 tho. i mean don't shoot me or nothing, but i did. personally, i am not a huge fan of what Morrison is doing wiht New. while i like an adult approach, i also like the mood in my comics to be less serious than that. the only bright spot in New is Emma. a super seious issue here and there, fine. but all of them? plus, while Uncanny is gettin better, I have noticed th quality of New slipping a little bit month after month. i mena seriously, how did Wolverine and Angel go from an exploding van to the diner, with no explanations whatsoever? one of several giant plot holes.

Uncanny is serious too, but it's got a certain quality that doesn't make it *quite* so dark and depressing as New. acutally, i think it's Stacy... i like her. and Iceman in 399, hehehe.. he's a cutie. not as much as Kurt, but i've always liked Iceman. i couldn't be more surprised, but i found i really like Stacy, except for the stint with uh, clinton... but overall... and i really did not like in 401, that Wolverine covered for her, to his best bud in the whole world, Kurt!

so, in short, i have issues with it, but... overall i don't think it's half as bad as most people, and it is getting better, so i have hope.

I see what you mean about NEW X-men Nocturne. But I think it simply has more todo with the abscene of Quitely. Whatever Quitely draws fits so nicely with Morrisons writing. Their work compliments each other. And Frank's style adds a bit of darkness/edginess to the read. I really enjoyed the last issue. But I was let down by the art. I think the guy currently drawing has talent, but he isn't the equal of what Quitely can do.

I agree with you, BC. I think Quitely is the best thing to happen to superhero comics in at least ten years. Kordey and Van Sciver are pretty good (Kordey is great on Cable, I think) but they both have storytelling issues. If Frank had drawn that van explosion scene, I think it would have been a lot clearer. Plus, his work has a certain humor to it that keeps Morrison's writing from seeming too grim.

By the way: am I the only one here who LOVES Sean Phillips? I feel like I'm always gushing about him and everyone else is like, "yeah...whatever." I think if he were the regular penciller on Uncanny instead of Garney, I would be a lot happier with that book.

Man, this is the second time someone has said how much they HATE Uncanny now and they've just dropped it and I just have to say noooooooo. How could anyone last through Poptopia only to drop it NOW? Now that they've got Stacy and the art is so very much better. And the writing well, it's been worse. Yes it has.

I've just started reading New X-Men too. Aside from having no idea what is happening, I like it. I've been reading each issue more than once which I find incredible. It's darker, but I don't have a problem with that.

Sean Phillips. Hmm. Who? *gets #400 and carefully examines each page* Dammit, they don't have the names of the artists on their pages! *asks Rex* Oh. Yeah. Not really my style but I can live with it.

And if one more person suggests Kurt should be placed under Claremont's control they are going to meet up with Fasheem, in the conservatory, with the lead pipe...

I wouldn't say that I _hate_ Uncanny, but I'm definitely disappointed in it. Whereas #400 showed some promise, #401 was a major letdown. But very few of the 'Nuff Said's have been pulled off well...Peter David's Captain Marvel and Paul Jenkins' Peter Parker are the two that have worked the best in my mind. The Hulk wasn't bad either. But when I look at the script in the back and see that the writer has something completely different in mind (On the first go-round, I didn't catch the whole Madrox thing, and thought that the lady in the dream sequence might possibly have been Mystique...)...well, that's not good.

I do think Sean Phillips would have been the best fit for this book, but maybe that's because Casey and Phillips worked well together on Wildcats. Garney's art isn't doing much for me.

As far as the others go, I enjoy New X-Men the most out of the three. Mainly because Morrison has done a great job of actually giving the people in the book character. Especially Emma. X-Treme, although it's taken a while to build up, is finally moving at a reasonable pace, and I like seeing Claremont work some stuff in from way back when (Tessa, for one). Not sure if I want Kitty back there - I liked the send off she got and think she should stay out of the picture for a while longer...

Of course, the main reason why Uncanny is so painful is that you read the Nightcrawler mini and realize that there are writers out there who totally GET Nightcrawler, but they seem to be in the minority. Oh well...let's hope that sales of the mini encourage the Powers That Be to give Kipiniak a larger role in the X-Universe.

i just wanna clear something up cause re-reading my post it came across slightly wrong. i don't dislike Morrison, he is very talented. just... as mentioned i am not a fan of dark, brooding continually ultra serious comics, that's all... jsut not my cup of tea. tho i must say when Quietly is drawing i like the book so much more.

yeah 401 was confusing, but... being Nuff Said and all, i am not letting it sway my overall view of the title too much, cause as mentioned, many of the Nuff Said books have been poorly pulled off and are confusing.


oh yeah, and i don't want him on X-Treme!!

I agree with Nocturne. I like Uncanny right now. I thought the first few issues *cough* POPTOPIA *cough* pretty well sucked, but it's picking up a bit now. I really liked 399 and 400. I agree 401 was weaker, but it was because of the 'Nuff Said. It's like the story was written to be a regular issue and then the text was just deleted. At least Exiles had a story that lent itself to being textless. I don't think Casey even tried to make the story suitable to be a textless issue. Oh well. I don't like Ron Garney so far either, though.

I really, really like New X-Men. The last issue with Jean was just great and I like his soap opera approach to the book. I must agree that his is the best of the three main books.

Sheemie, I'll help you with that lead pipe, hon. Just say NO to Claremont, people! He is the one who jacked Kurt up. He was great in the past, and X-Treme is getting better, but his last take on the core X-Men books just killed me.

Really, Uncanny is much better now under Casey than is was with Claremont last year. I think Kurt should stay right where he is, and I'm waiting to see what's up with this Pontiff thing. I'm betting there's going to be a major change to his character coming up. At least Casey does remember Kurt and Logan's friendship. Although I wonder why he's covering for Stacy, and I wonder what Kurt was goin off on her for.

Casey's script says this, but doesn't say what Kurt is upset about. He wasn't supposed to know that she was in that house from the script.
